 Black Soldier Fly larva 

Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, is a common and widespread fly of the family Stratiomyidae. The larvae and adults are considered neither pests nor vectors.  Instead, black soldier fly larvae play a similar role to that of redworms (Red Wigglers) as essential decomposers in breaking down organic substrates and returning nutrients to the soil.  The larvae have voracious appetites and can be used for composting household food scraps and agricultural waste products (in warm climates of 80F -100 F).

The larva of the black soldier fly is recognized by many authorities to be one of the very best live feeders available for herps, birds and aquatics. (Don't be fooled by its small size. it packs a real Nutritional Punch like NO other grub!)

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are an excellent source of sustainable protein for aqua culture, animal feed, pet and human nutrition. They are truly a Maintenance-Free grub and can last 4-5 weeks in the larva stage when kept dormant at 50-55 F

Our BSF larve are raised on a grain rich probiotic diet for a higher Calcium analysis, which makes them the Best Live Feeder insect you can feed your pets (lizards, birds, fish, frogs, etc.) 

Calci-worms, Repti-worms and Phoenix Worms are all the same species of worm: black soldier fly larvae. The difference between them is the way they are raised, the prices, and the packaging.  Keep in mind that the key to a healthy Beardie is variation in diet.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are used to compost waste or convert the waste into animal feed. 

The harvested pupae and prepupae are eaten by poultry, fish, pigs, lizards, turtles, and even dogs.

In nature a wide variety of animals feed on BSF larvae including: ants, rodents and other small mammals, lizards, amphibians, and many birds. By releasing mature BSF around your property you’re essentially feeding the many types of wild creatures around you, and if you have any friends with chickens, fish, lizards, etc., you’ll become even more popular if you have free high quality feed to offer them.

 

BSFL are very good for both young and adult bearded dragons, though you should give a higher count of BSFL to the adults since the worms are quite small for older beardies. 

 BSFL are low in fat and very high in calcium, naturally containing 23 to 61 times more calcium than other popular feeder insects

Since the worms have a low-fat content, they can be used as a staple food for your little reptile's diet.  

The Large BSFL are about 3/4" long, and great feeders for adult reptiles or amphibians ... 

Keep your worms in the original closed container to preserve the correct moisture balance . BSFL will keep for weeks at room temperatures from 60-70 degrees. For even longer shelf life, keep cool (50-60 degrees) but do not refrigerate.

BSFL are one of the most beneficial flies in existence and are considered non-pests. The adult black soldier fly does not have mouthparts and does not feed upon waste. They do not bite, and as only the larva feed, the flies are not associated with transmitting any diseases.  Adult BS Flies live for 5-8 days. In this time they must find a mate and lay eggs. The eggs take about 4 days to hatch, and then the larvae will take roughly 2 weeks (only in warm temperatures - above 80 F) before they are ready to pupate (become adults).

Reptiles love chasing the flies to gobble them up so even when your BSF grubs turn into the flies there is NO waste as your lizards will eat them up too...!
